Fernando Alonso has had his thumbs insured by personal sponsor Santander, after striking a new deal with the Spanish banking giant on Monday.

In a press conference held in Madrid, the company announced a new one-year deal with the Ferrari driver, who will now also be sponsored by Santander's insurances branch. He was already sponsored by the banking branch of the group.

During the event, Santander said it had given Alonso a life and accident insurance, with special coverage for his thumbs, worth 10 million euros ($13.3m)

"Alonso's thumbs are a big symbol as, apart from being essential when driving a Formula 1 car, they represent a sign of victory and that everything is under control and well protected," said Santander in a statement.
